Are you a music student or a music lover considering a trip to England? Or perhaps just curious about music outside your own country?
Well, the first question you may think to ask is what are the different types of English music?
The question is a deceptively simple one. It is as simple and complex as asking about different types of English Wine or English Fruit etc. By this I mean that, for the most part, it is the same as anywhere else in the world, except that with their own British style applied to it.
Just as there are English strawberries, there are also Egyptian strawberries, Australian strawberries, and so forth. They are all strawberries but because of their location they all have their own unique and individual flavour. Or for another analogy, if you look through 123 music instruments online you will find that there are yamaha pianos but there are also steinway piano and kawai pianos.
English music is exactly the same. It’s musical culture includes English Song, which could mean anything from folk music to British Rock music. It has symphony orchestras, some of the best in fact, with the likes of London Philharmonic and conductors like Simon Rattle. England is also famous, surprisingly for it’s distinctly eastern music like Punjabi song, which in the 1980s was outselling it’s English counterparts!
Some of the most famous British musicians include Freddie Mercury, The Sex Pistols, Oasis and… the Spice Girls.
Suffice to say, the term English Music is one that symbolizes serious diversity with styles ranging from classical to rock, pop to punk – and some punjabi song to boot. The only real way to understand and know what English music is about is to listen to some, just as you will never understand how amazing English Strawberries are until you eat them.
Happy Listening/Eating!
