Although it sounds like a cliche, some people really are addicted to work. Work addicts typically spend long hours at the office, even when they aren’t needed, and experience anxiety, irritability, or depression when forced to go home. When they aren’t working, they may still be thinking about work, or calling the office “just to check up on things” every few hours.
While a strong work ethic is a desirable trait, work addiction disrupts the sufferer’s life in unpleasant ways. Friends and family members may become angry with the addict’s constant obsession over their job, and co-workers often see addicts as brown-nosers and “suck-ups.” Moreover, the addict often knows something is wrong, but can’t pinpoint the source of their anxiety, which can lead to even more addictive behaviors.
Addiction help is available for work addicts. Talk therapy, either in a group or one on one with a counselor, is the most common starting treatment, and is usually effective in most cases. Patients with extreme anxiety may be prescribed medications to ease their symptoms. Family therapy is recommended to help the patient’s family members deal with underlying issues, as well, such as guilt and anger.
Many cases of work addiction stem from a combination of low self esteem and a less-than-ideal home environment. Some addicts work to escape an unsatisfying marriage, boring social life, or simply a stressful situation at home, such as the chronic illness or disability of a child. Other workaholics believe that their only value in life is that of an employee, and will go to any lengths to hold onto their job, even if they hate it. In order to be effective, addiction treatment for workaholics must address these issues, and offer viable means to deal with problems besides running off to work.
With professional treatment, work addiction can be cured. A whole family approach is often recommended, not just to help the addict, but also to teach the family better communication and coping skills. The prognosis for work addicts is excellent with proper treatment and a desire to get help.
