The process of brainstorming a new product roadmap template should start out with your own basic ideas. In this article I’ll show you a standard process for designing new roadmaps that incorporates market research and ideation.
The product manager usually has the responsibility for defining product roadmaps. The starting point is putting together as many new ideas as possible. These can come from new feature requests, business development strategies, identifying new technologies, etc. It is essential to have a broad range of ideas starting out so that you have a broader spectrum of product feature possibilities.
Categorize each of these ideas based on their target market. Doing so will allow you to explicitly define products that could satisfy each market. Your then in a good position to research how desirable each market is based on its return on investment, competition levels, market size, etc. The objective of this market research is to get rid of markets and ideas you don’t wish to pursue and focus in on one or two markets that could prove to be very profitable.
You can then start making a draft copy of your product roadmap template. Initially look at what short-term goals you want to pursue for one or two product lines relating to the key markets identified in your research. Longer-term opportunities are often included button may not be always necessary. It is definitely worth including them if they are variations on product lines. This is a common architectural choice that can be made early on in the product design and implementation which can prove to be very profitable if you can make numerous product variations (e.g. the Sony Walkman).
Finally, the product roadmap template can be made into draft copies and distributed to your colleagues for review. Changes and ideas can easily be refactored at this early stage. Subsequent changes will occur and the entire process of creating ideas, market research and rewriting elements of the product roadmap will have to continuously be managed by the product manager.
