Concrete floor resurfacing is not a job that necessarily needs a professional to come in. There are several media options to learn the art so that the project can be done by the homeowner instead. One such option is the Internet. Do it yourself sites dot cyberspace with all kinds of helpful hints on home projects.
Ground floors of homes are often poured. This allows a more stable area upon which to build the structure because it seldom settles. In some cases, after years of use, even covered with linoleum or some similar surface, the concrete will eventually need to be resurfaced to maintain its integrity.
Scraping up the coating, paint, linoleum or tiles is the first step. Remove all of the adhesives and paint right down to the last fleck. Anything left can cause inconsistency with the resurfacing of the area.
Clean it thoroughly with a broom to remove large debris then vacuum or spray with water depending on where the floor is. Let that dry all the way, a day at least, before applying the first coat of new concrete.
The mix should be a loose paste that will spread easily. It should be no more than a quarter to a half inch thick. A second coat should be added as you go so the area will be as smooth as possible. There are tools that will allow you to get it right up to the edge of the walls. Be sure to fill in all holes, pock marks and air pockets as you work.
Use a finishing broom to make it more even. If during this process if the concrete beads up, spray with a fine mist of water to keep it from drying too fast. Give it a couple of days to set up before adding anything to it. If it will be covered with another flooring material it is finished. If not and the concrete is what will show, adding a sealant is the best way to finish. This will give it a longer life and keep it from being damaged by other substances in the future.
