Magnitude relates to an economy of scale. In business, there are generally two ways to make a lot of money. You can either serve a lot of people something relatively small (think cell phone subscribers) or you can serve a few people something really big (think house on the beach in Malibu). How does magnitude come into play if you are a criminal defense lawyer? It’s pretty simple, really. The more ways you can find to add value to your service, the more you can charge per case. The more you can charge per case, the more money you automatically put into your pocket.
And typically, there is a lot of value out there you are already providing, you just haven’t brought it to the attention of your clients.
For example, let’s say you regularly give out your cell phone number to your clients and encourage them to call if they ever have an emergency. This is something not everyone does. Some people would be willing to pay more for that. Point it out and raise your price a bit. Let’s say part of every one of your investigations is doing a laundry list of things. Write that laundry list down and show the client. And raise your fees a bit.
