You’ve probably seen how plastic business cards are starting to take over from the older card-based designs. I discovered this recently at a conference where nearly half the cards I came back with were plastic. In this post I’ll show you what types of trends are appearing in this innovative new market.
I was inspired by the number of different business card designs I received after attending a conference in Germany last summer. The plastic business cards really stood out from the standard paper cards and came in all shapes, sizes and colors. Some of which were even fluorescent which, while almost straining the eyes, have really made the card owners company stick in my mind. As a result, I just knew when I arrived back that I had to look into getting some for myself.

The great thing with plastic business cards is that there are many online printers. You have to make sure to choose either four-color process printing or PMS spot color printing as these seem to give the better effects. This will limit the number of printers you can choose from though.
The next option then is simply to start looking into what design and printing options you can choose. This is really only limited by your own imagination. The business card designs can be based on standard templates, integrate your own logos or faults and even include pictures. The cards can be produced in a frosted, clear or solid plastic color and don’t necessarily have to be cut to standard business card/credit card sizes so it’s worth considering some quirky designs especially if your industry is meant to be quite innovative.
I ended up going for some translucent plastic business cards with a colorful logo and simple contact information. This cost around $50 for nearly 500 cards though better rates are often available if you go for more wholesale options (i.e. it’s worth looking into bulk purchases for several of your work colleagues).
