Talk Like A Marine – Common Marine Corps Sayings

Ever wonder what Marines are really saying when they use some of that Marine Corps lingo? Below are some of my favorites and some of the most commonly used. Have fun using these on your military friends!

1st CivDiv – “First Civilian Division” is a Marine who is no longer with the military and is now living in the civilian world.
Blue Falcon – “Buddy F@#$%^ or “Bravo Foxtrot,” Is a Marine who is not very helpful, and generally only cares about himself.
Boot – A new Marine, usually fresh out of MCRD (Marine Corps Recruit Depot).
Cheesedick – Completing a mission with the least amount of effort required. As in “He cheesedicked that run.”
Cover – Military headgear of any type. “Where’s your cover Marine?”
Devil Dog – A US Marine. Devil Dog originated from the German word “Teufel Hunden” Which is said to be a nickname given to us be the German soldiers during World War I in the battle of Belleau Wood. When the German soldiers reported to their superiors. They would report that the Marines fought like “hounds from hell.”

Field Day – Is a time set aside specifically for a complete and immaculate cleanup of the barracks. A strict inspection usually followed.
FNG – “F!@#$%^ New Guy- The same as a boot. A new Marine.
Jarhead – A Marine, It is said to originate from the popular “high and tight” haircut that resembles a jar like shape on the top of the head.
Jodie/Jody – A person who steals a Marine’s significant other when they’re on deployment.
PFT – The Marine Corps Physical Fitness Test, every Marine has to complete bi-annually. A score of 300 on the PFT is a perfect score. The events consist of pull-ups, crunches, and a 3 mile run.
Libo – Liberty, time away from the shop or the field. Time to be away from work.
Oorah! – Marines will yell this out to acknowledge an order, to say yes, or to express enthusiasm.
POG – Person (or personnel) Other than Grunt. Rhymes with “rogue”. Is any Marine who is not a grunt.
Grunt – A Marine Corps Infantryman
Quarterdecking – Also known as “incentive training,” or “IT.” Is a form of punishment used on recruits to either make them smarter or stronger.
Rock – A slow or dumb Marine.
Semper Fu – Refers to the Marine Corps Martial Arts Program. It is the hand to hand combat system used by Marines. The word is a combination of “Semper Fi” and “kung-fu”.
Zero – A different way of saying stop or freeze, commonly used at boot camp by drill instructors. “Zeeeroo Marine! What do you think you’re doing?
