Why use Word format just because Microsoft have such a hold in the business community when all we really need is something that deals with text effectively. You could also do some research into using Markdown formatting and you could use an application like Edito or NebulousNotes which let you write Markdown very easily. You have some formatting but is also very readable.

There are some applications for the iPad which are not Microsoft office but another version of office, just in case you need to have a spreadsheet or a different word processor. But trust me it is not necessary, there are cheaper and better ways.
Have a look in the iTunes store and you will find Documents to Go Premium Office Suite you can create edit and view files from Word Excel and PowerPoint.Virtual PC With Open Office Suite. AndSmart Office, in which you can edit and view major office documents.
For presentation software there is Keynote on the iPad which also links up with Keynote on the Mac and you can even produce PowerPoint presentations from Keynote.
For writing don’t forget Pages which is the word processor from Apple that is much more capable, it is more like a desktop publishing application.
