The Three Main Ingredients Used In The Making Of Nepali Movies.

What makes a film? This is a great question, and the one which has no fixed answers. There is no one thing that can make a film, but one mistake can surely break a film. It is like other enterprises, sports, policies, arts, literature and so on. All these things do not have one thing that will make them big in people’s eyes, but one fault and none will talk about them. So, when one makes movie there are many things to be considered. A slight disruption in the process can create problems in the box-office, or in the eyes of the critics. And, who would voluntarily want to give up the investment made in movies? After all, the movie industry is full of luster and dreams.

Be it Hollywood or the Nepali filmindustry, they follow and have been following a certain pattern in making of the movies. This might not be obvious in Hollywood movies, but if you think about it they have separated their movies into genres. According to the genres come similar stories, but different executions. This is where they beat most of the Nepali movies; most Nepali movies have similar stories, as well as execution. There are hardly any movies that have used the same old story, but tried to package it into new presentation; except for First Love and Kohi Mero in the recent times. In fact, one can distinguish the three main ingredients used in the making of Nepali movies.

  • The number one ingredient is the actors/actresses; they are used according to the film, but also according to their popularity. One can see Rajesh Hamal in almost all of the movies, even today, when there are many new actors/actresses in the scene. It is an unsaid mantra that to use a popular actor/actress in a movie guarantees success.
  • Similarly, the number two ingredient is the action sequences. Very few Nepali movies have been made without any action scenes, and fewer have succeeded. One of the movies that I can think of is Tulsi Ghimire’s Darpan Chaaya. Action sells in Nepali movies, and therefore, at least one scene is required where the hero beats the villain.

  • The third ingredient is the music, which is a not only required in Nepali movie but also in Hindi movie. In my opinion, this may be one ingredient that people agree, should never be cast out of Nepali movies. Music is in the blood of the Nepali people, and they love to listen to new songs and get enamored with beautiful lyrics. Many have gained name and fame because of the playback music in Nepali movies like Ranjit Gajmer, Sambhujit Baskota, Udit Narayan Jha, Devika Banda, and Anju Pant as of recent. For most Nepali audience, actors/actresses, action sequence and music makes a film.
