Search Engine Optimization (SEO) For A Work At Home Business

Search engine optimization or as it is better known SEO is basically the process of optimising web pages so that the major search engines Google,Yahoo or Bing will find and index them.

The ultimate goal being that the web page, being targeted, gets listed in number one position on the first page results from a particular search engine, for a chosen keyword.
For example, if the keyword being targeted was “tea bags” then the goal would be to have your web page show up in the first position of the search engine results when an internet user typed in the phrase “tea bags”.
Achieving this is dependant on many factors including the amount of competition for the keyword chosen, the age of the competing sites, the amount of other sites pointing to the competition, generally know as back links and the amount of content relating to the subject.

Most of the leading search engines have slightly different methods for ranking web pages, however the overriding factor for all of them is to index valuable content, in other words content that will benefit any internet searcher that is directed towards the web page. Then the search engines will decide upon the authority of the web page by looking at how many other web sites link to it.
Search Engine OptimizationIt is important to understand, when working on SEO, that the search engines do not rank web sites they actually rank individual web pages, therefore just because a web site ranks well for one particular keyword this does not necessarily mean that it will rank highly for another keyword. Each keyword that requires SEO must be worked on individually.
Each web page, contained within a website, must be considered as a totally separate unit and the search engine optimisation work for each page completed on it’s own merit. It may also be very advantageous to interlink, via keywords, each and every separate web page within the web site.

It may help, initially, to target what are generally referred to as “long tail keywords” when building web pages. These types of keywords will normally get indexed and ranked highly quicker than more competitive keywords. Once the website is indexed and ranked for some minor “long tail keywords” then the more competitive keywords may be worked on.
For example: If the website being built is about “dogs” then work on the keywords “leather dog collars” or “how to groom my dog” before going for the very competitive “dogs” keyword. Once the search engines see some sort of authority with the minor keywords then the major keywords will be much easier to rank highly for.

Keep in mind that any search engine optimisation work will take time, commitment and perseverance, this type of work will not produce results overnight. Search engine optimization is a must for all your work from home ideas and work from home business plans, if you intend to make working at home a success then a fair amount of time will have to be dedicated to SEO. The pay off, however, will be worth it.
