While the gruesome and provocative tend to dominate Halloween costumes these days, at least one classy timeless choice remains: the green fairy costume. A favorite of little girls, bigger girls, and even the occasional lad, the fairy costume remains a tried and true Halloween classic.
The fairy costume brings general thoughts of the Renaissance and Victorian times, as well as more storybook manifestations in the form of Tinker Bell or the Blue Fairy. Girls love to dress as fairies because they are pretty, yes, but also because they hold a mysterious, positive magical quality.
Dressing up as a fairy can be fiendishly simple. One just requires a frilly dress, perhaps even from the dress up box or in the back of the closet with the old dance recital outfits, and a bit of sparkle. Perhaps add a crown, cardboard and tinfoil would do. And, of course, attach wings to the back. Top it off with a magic wand and a little cloth bag full of sparkles, and it’s a delightful costume one will remember for a long time.
Of course there are different styles of fairy costumes. A Blue Fairy would, naturally, dress in blue. A darker, more adult, perhaps more gothic fairy costume would have a different wardrobe, with a bit of black lace and eyeliner, and perhaps a bit sexier as well. And while a frilly dress, wands, and sparkles may work for the more Renaissance fairy described above, a Victorian fairy might have more of a skirt, and more delicate wings. And then, certainly, there is the Tooth Fairy, who would require a little bag for lost baby teeth, and the Fairy Godmother, who would choose a more matronly outfit.
There are countless varieties of fairies to choose from, and one can even invent their own! Fairies are fun to dress us as and bring much needed cheer to the gloom and doom of Halloween.
