Is Your Garden Baby Proof – Baby Proofing Your garden

Most baby proofing books and products are aimed at your home. Few if any of them talk about the outdoors. It is vital that you do make your home 100% safe for your children but as they become toddlers you will find that they want to spend more and more of their time outdoors. No matter how much you spend on baby proofing the inside of your home that will not help if you are outside for half the day.

So what things do you need to look for when you are thinking about your child’s safety outdoors.

Electrical Sockets
If you have electricity outside your home check that the covers on the sockets are tight. You can even go a step further and insert plastic plugs in the sockets just as you did with your indoor sockets. If you have sockets that you do not use then think about getting blank cover plates for them, they are easy enough to change back into sockets when you do need them but they are 100% safe from small fingers.

baby proofingChemicals
While it may not seem that you have any dangerous chemicals laying around, if you do any kind of gardening then it is almost certain that you do have something that can cause harm. Think not just about the sprays but about the ant killing powder and the slug pellets, all of these would be deadly to a small child. Put them up as high as you can and if possible do not let your children see you using them.

Kids want to mimic their parents and if they see you spraying weed killer they will want to try and do it themselves.

When you are looking at these items don’t forget to look at the fuel for your lawn mower and weed whacker. All these things can be deadly to children so it is vital that you put them as far away from reach as you can. Baby proofing your garden shed can take some doing but you will be pleased you did.
