The Christmas song “Up on the House Top” was written by an American composer named Benjamin Russell Hanby back in 1864 in the town of New Paris, Ohio, USA. This particular Christmas carol is the second-oldest secular Christmas song, outdone only by “Jingle Bells”, which was written in 1857. It is also considered the first Yuletide song to focus primarily on Santa Claus.
The song talks about how Santa Claus works. Just as what most of us believe in, Santa rides his reindeer as he journeys from house to house to bring children gifts for Christmas day. Up on the house top, as the title suggest, he makes his way through the chimney. Santa Claus, or Saint Nick as some call him, stars by going through the stocking of each kid, whose names are Nell and Will, based on the song. It also plays a big part in filling childrens hearts with Christmas spirit as toys such as balls and dolls are mentioned in the Christmas carol.
Most of you may not know this, but it is considered a fact that this song was the first to offer up the idea that Santa and his sleigh land on the roof of homes, according to Readers Digest Merry Christmas Song Book; and this famous idea has been used by many people throughout the world.
Because of the song’s popularity and cheerful tune, the song has been used as a basis for a television special produced by Perennial Pictures Film Corporation in Indianapolis, Indiana. The TV special came in a title of the same name as the song. This just shows how popular the song has become. Various artists such as Gene Autry, Jimmy Buffett and The Jackson 5 also have made their own versions of the song, and it being enjoyed by many people around the world.
