One of the problems that many people face when one of their friends hits 40 is to come up with a present that is both unique and means something to them. Of course, it’s men who actually find this task a lot harder than women. It’s got something to do with men not being quite as good as women at putting themselves in someone else’s shoes. Nevertheless, it’s a something that sooner or later every man has to do. And as a man whose wife is getting near 40, I thought that explaining how I go about coming up with the right idea of a 40th birthday gift for her.
It may seem a bit of a cop-out, but I actually ask her! Now to don’t get me wrong, I don’t just say to her, “hey, you’ve got a birthday coming up soon, what do you want?” because that’s a bit uncaring. Actually I asked her in response to writing this article! I asked her what she thought women wanted for their birthdays, and she was all too happy to tell me. So what did she say? She said that the one thing that women found most was that they weren’t appreciated. For example, they loved their families, but they often felt they had nothing for themselves. And clothes were great, but only if there was something to wear them out to.
In short 40th birthday ideas for my wife would make her feel special, and cared for, and would probably involve clothes as long as we went out somewhere when we had bought them.
So should everyone ask their wives or girlfriends what they want? Not necessarily, but you could get really crafty. Why not ask one of their friends to find out for you? They could ask your wife what it is that they hope that you are going to buy them for their birthday, and then go out and get it for them!
