Scotland anglers compete in contests and fishing games on a continual basis. The most popular of all these competitions is the brown trout competition. Each anglers club in Scotland owns the right to fish in certain areas of lakes and rivers. In order to participate in the competitions, a person must purchase a valid permit to fish from the angling club. Fly fishing is another popular competition, and it is substantially more difficult then bait fishing.
There are two formats of fly fishing competitions. One format is a multiple day competition, and the other is a one day competition. There are professional referees that oversee these competitions, and they inspect the angler’s fishing tackle, as well as certify the catches.
There are also umpires that certify the catches, as well, and Scotland’s law states that any fish less than 9 inches long must be returned to the water. Traditionally, the fish were measured by weight, however, new techniques have been implemented due to certain tampering methods that were used to make the fish seem weightier than they were. The new method used to measure the fish is by length. The catch is measured by the referee from tail to nose, and this way no tampering can be accomplished.
The Ayrstike Burns competition is held in ten separate southwest locations between the months of May and November. The entry fee to participate is fifteen dollars per angler. The entry fees are then divided as prize money between the anglers who place in the top ten. After the top ten have placed in the competition, the Spring Water Fishery is the site of the final round where these top ten will do battle to determine the ultimate winner. Trout fishing is entertaining and exciting, and whether one is a pro or an amateur, it is fun to participate in contests. Fishing competitions are an excellent way for anglers to spend their leisure time.
