Is Cork Environmentally Safe?

There are many advantages that come with the simple material of cork roll and sheets and one of them is being environmentally safe. These materials are actually different grades of cork rolled into the form of a sheet that can be either thick or thin depending on the usage. Cork is a very abundant naturally occurring tree in the Mediterranean areas, where it grows in the form of thick forests. The bark of the cork tree is what is used to make sheets and once the bark is properly treated to take away the outer rough surfaces most of the cork is turned into the form of a slab. Some of the first things to be made out of these slabs are bottle caps made with cork. Later the remainder cork is turned into rolls of cork and mixed with binder and molded and shaped into sheets and blocks. This entire process is tedious but when the cork sheets are finally churned out of this process, they can become interesting décor and coverage pieces for the home and the work place. In this way, natural cork can be made into something very useful.

There might be many questions regarding the actual processing of the cork and whether or not it is safe and healthy to use in the home. Well traditionally cork was used along with another chemical known as urea formaldehyde. Basically the urea formaldehyde was used as a binding agent for the agglomeration of the cork. But since that chemical was proven to be dangerous since the eighties, another binder has been in use to process cork into blocks. This binder is made from chemicals like phenol formaldehyde, natural proteins and some urea melamine which are completely harmless substances. Although the stability of the previous binder was more, this binder is just as well and provides a very stable kind of bonding for the cork. For this reason it is definitely very safe and healthy to use cork around the house. But of course some companies might make use of harsher organic compounds for adhesive purposes and to make different designs and items out of the cork sheets. If you think you do not want to keep these items, you can always look for adhesives and finishes that are less harmful for the environment. As far as cork itself is concerned there is not shedding of gases or microfibers so there is no need to be worried about cork hurting the environment.

In addition to being completely environmentally safe, cork sheet and rolls of cork are naturally good at resisting moisture and mold and even rot so it can actually last very long without being harmed in the natural environment. Cork is very environment friendly and in addition to that the removal of the cork bark does not really kill the tree itself either. Although it might be more susceptible to outside problems, there are new methods being devised every day to make cork even healthier and environmentally safe as far as harvesting is concerned.
