About the Benefits of Fish Oil

Fish oil is obtained from the tissue of some fatty fish such as tuna, salmon, mackerel, sardines, lake trout, and herring. Because of the many proven fish oil benefits that we can obtain through consumption of fish oil, it is best recommended to be included in one’s daily balanced diet. Most people may be familiar with the term “Omega-3” that they usually see on the labels of many popular products. Oil from fatty fish contains Omega-3 fatty acids; specifically fish oil contains DHA (also known as docosahexaenoic acid) and EPA (also known as eicosapentaenoic acid).

It is also believed to have beneficial effects in reducing heart related diseases such as coronary heart disease. Because of this, experts greatly recommend that people eat fatty fish more frequently, especially those who are at risk. Another good effect of regular consumption of fish oil to people’s health is its known ability to help lower and regulate the cholesterol levels in the human body.  Studies have shown that there is a high correlation between regular consumption of fish oil and lowered blood pressure.

Up to the present, scientists still continue to experiment and research on other health benefits that fish may provide to human. Although research is still ongoing, early studies have shown that DHA and EPA from fatty fish may help people suffering from arthritis, asthma, colitis and lupus. Moreover, experts also believe that they may also prove in the future that fish oil could also help prevent and cure cancer.

Unfortunately, eating fish on a daily basis is no longer recommended due to the contamination that has occurred to most of the planet’s oceans, rivers, and lakes.  As such, most doctors advise their patients to take fish oil supplements instead.
