Guide To Nursing Homes And Elder Care Facilities

Many seniors do not like the idea of moving to a rest home. That is often the case because they know little about elder care facilities and nursing homes. Reading this guide will answer a lot of questions, and will clear up numerous misconceptions.

  • Nursing home selection – Obtain as much information as you can about nursing homes in your area. Not all of them offer the same quality care.  Visit the nursing homes on your list and talk to the administrator and key staff members. You can also strike up a conversation with some of the residents. If they are happy with the care they receive, you may have found your new home.
  • Personal effects – Residents moving into nursing homes can decorate their room with personal items. They can keep a family photo on their nightstand, drape a familiar blanket over their comfy chair, watch the TV they brought with them, etc. Residents will wear their own clothes and shoes

Visitors – Residents of elder care and skilled nursing homes can receive visitors during visiting hours. Visits can take place in the resident’s room or designated areas that allow for privacy.  These places respect the rights and privacy of their seniors. Residents can also go on outings with their family members.

  • Medical care – The medically trained staff at a nursing home will dispense medication. Caregivers will remind the seniors to take their pills. If a resident becomes ill, a doctor will come. If that is not possible, the resident will be brought to a nearby medical facility or hospital. Family members will be notified.
  • Short-term or long-term – these care facilities have wings assigned to long-term care patients, and those that only stay until they have recovered from illness, injury, or have finished their rehabilitation program.
  • Payment – The cost of nursing home care varies. Talk to a nursing home administrator and your insurance company about policies and payment options.
