Treatment Options For Impacted Teeth At A Sunnyvale Family Dentist

A tooth or teeth that fail to fully erupt through the gum line is called an impaction, or impacted.  These teeth can either partially erupt or not erupt at all, and have many known side effects.  According to Sunnyvale dentists, these side effects include discomfort, pain, swelling, redness, and crowding of the teeth.  Partially impacted teeth are also prone to infection due to the fact that a flap of gum with still cover the tooth, and food can easily become lodged there.  This food eventually rots, producing bacteria.  Once an infection is present, it must first be treated before any other course of action can be taken.  The dentist will like prescribe antibiotics which will be taken daily until the infection has cleared.

To diagnose an impaction, first your Sunnyvale family dentist will do a visual exam. Once the initial exam is complete, x-rays will be taken of the patients oral cavity.  These will provide the dentist with a look of what is going on both above and below the gum line.  After this is complete the dentist can than choose the best possible course of action for the patient.  The most commonly impacted teeth are the wisdom teeth, which grow in between the ages of 17 and 25. These teeth are more likely to become impacted because there is not sufficient enough space to accommodate their arrival. If they are not removed, even without signs of impaction, they can cause long term damage to the overall structure of the teeth, such as crowding.

The most common treatment method for impacted teeth is extraction.  An extraction is a procedure to remove a tooth.  The dentist will use a local anesthetic in the area of the tooth, and if necessary a general anesthetic as well. Nitrous oxide, or laughing gas, will also be used in the procedure. If the tooth is fully impacted, the gums will need to be cut away to allow access to the tooth.  During a partial impaction only a small portion of gum need be removed.  Once the tooth or teeth have been extracted, the open spaces will be stitched up, and the patient will be provided with at home care instructions as well as a pain reliever.  Other treatment methods for an impaction include removal of excess gum line.  This is common in impactions on permanent teeth as a means to preserve them.
