Modular Lightweight Load-carrying Equipment known as MOLLE is a military backpack currently used by the U.S. Army. This backpack is designed for survivability and lethality of the modern Soldier.
This modern pack was developed at the U.S. Army Soldier Systems Center in 2001. It was developed to replace the aging ALICE the all-purpose, lightweight, individual carrying equipment pack that had been used since 1988.
One of the main components of this new system is its nylon mesh vest and now metal. The vest was made with removable pockets in order to accommodate soldiers many different carrying needs. They make adapting to the mission easier. The pockets are large enough to hold gear like water, rations, and extra ammunition soldiers would need. The pockets can be moved or taken off the pack altogether.
The system also advances a soldiers load-carrying. It has a new built in suspension system. The heavily padded shoulder straps and waist belt are adjustable. This system distributes weight more evenly across the shoulders and hips. This allows soldiers to carry their backpacks more comfortably during a prolonged road march.
The MOLLE system comes with a built in water pouch for on-the-move hydration. The water is delivered through a tube like system and made to supplement the one-quart canteen the soldiers carry.
This system also comes with two six-foot lashing straps that are made for carrying larger objects. A soldier could easily carry such things as a mortar base plate or five-gallon containers. It also has a built in repair kit so if one of the plastic buckles breaks it can simply be replaced right in the field. The new anatomically contoured frame has been made of a thin plastic that was originally used in automobile bumpers. The use of this plastic has dramatically increased the durability and functionability of this system in extreme temperatures. This new MOLLE backpack system can take five times the abuse as the old system without any damage.
