Wood carving has been around since the dawn of time. A lot of families have a piece that was passed down from generation to generation. If you would like to learn the art of wood carving you need to know some essential basics.
Before You Begin
Purchase a book about hand wood carving from a discount or used book store. Look for one that gives precise instructions on what tools to use, how to use them and what kind of wood that works best. After you start to learn the basics, find a theme book that provides patterns to your personal preference. Wildlife, ships or flowers are very popular.
The Tools
Start out with a basic wood carving set. I recommend purchasing a set because it will save you money as opposed to purchasing one piece at a time. Additional sets or pieces can be added later on. Most sets are not sharpened (honed). Something to keep in mind because if you are not aware of it, you will be taking home a dull carving set. Look for companies that provide honing, or have someone you know sharpen them. Grip is very important because you will be holding on to it sometimes for a long period of time. Make sure it is comfortable. If you have larger hands, you want to use a palm grip. Smaller hands might be best fitted with a long handle set. I suggest, if you can, grip them to see how they feel. Sets of six are available for around forty dollars and about six dollars more if they are honed.
The Wood
Basswood is a good wood to work with and available in craft stores. It’s a soft wood, economical affordable and easy to work with for detailed work. Butternut is also a good choice.
