Sicily has acquired fame for its coasts, its beaches and its islands; apart from these, it is still one of the least known regions of Italy, and unforgettable Sicily holidays. Protected by the sea and by the mountains, it has until recent years escaped industrialization and therefore much of the ugliness of the modern world. It has also for that reason, suffered backwardness and poverty.
An ancient and mysterious land, it has been formed by a turbulent history and successive waves of settlement, into a strongly individual region of modern Italy. Within this region are marked local variations; each province is of outstanding natural beauty and great cultural and historical interest. The Barbagia does not deserve, and doubtless never did, the unflattering reference by Dante in the XXII Canto of the Purgatorio, nor still more opprobrious description said to have been given in the sixth century by St Gregory.
In recent years a new and more fortunate era has been opened by tourism, and thanks to the efforts of the Italian government through the Cassa per il Mezzogiorno, industry and improved communications have brought work and prosperity. On the whole this development has been very well done, with less cost to the environment than in most regions of the Mediterranean.
When you come to Sicily, you’ll immediately experience its fascination. Much of the island, it must be admitted, is arid and harsh; it is a majestic and challenging, not an ingratiating country.
The spectacular, the luxuriant, the dramatic, have been eschewed for austere, more classical virtues; economy, discipline, the best use of space. In these spread, baked plains the least embellishment acquires singular force; the slightest changes of color achieve miraculous lyric contrast. It is beautifully bread country, undemonstrative, hinting at nobility, always offering plenty of elbow room. Mediterranean landscapes tend to be obviously and self-consciously romantic; Sicily is a series of lucid statements leading up to an inevitable, but perfectly prepared climax.

South of mainland Italy lies the island of Sicily, home to an ancient culture that–with its stark landscapes, glorious coastlines, and extraordinary treasure troves of art and archeology–has seduced travelers for centuries. But at the heart of the island’s rare beauty is a network of violence and corruption that reaches into every corner of Sicilian life: Cosa Nostra, the Mafia.
