Germany has the second biggest road system in the world. These roads carry an enormous amount of traffic and the volume is growing each year. Additionally, Germany is also a major crossroad in Europe and funnels much of the north-south and east-west traffic for the continent.
Roads
Roads in Germany are well maintained and engineered. It is very rare to find a pothole and snow is removed almost instantaneously. To put it simply, German roads are first class. Streets and roads in Germany are narrower than roads in the US, although many of the vehicles are still quite large. It is fairly common to see mega-sized 7 seater 4×4 vehicles driving alongside mini sprint cars for sale on the autobahn.
Maps
Just like the roads, German maps are excellent quality. The best maps are from the ADAC auto club and Hallwag. Michelin also creates an excellent collection of city and regional maps. Tourist offices throughout the country also have free maps that have adequate detail and scope.
Driving Tips for Germany
Breakdowns
Germany has a few major motorist and automobile clubs. The largest are ADAC and AvD, which both offer a large array of services for motorists. Getting basic help from the roadside breakdown service will be free, but you will be required to pay for towing or parts. To ask for help, use a nearby emergency phone, which is located in 2km intervals along the autobahn. Follow the roadside arrows to find the nearest phone.
Fuel
Diesel and gasoline are readily available throughout the country. However, filling stations are not as prolific in some countries such as America. Most smaller towns will have at least one fuel station and the Autobahn and major highways have several 24hour fuel stations available. Pumps in Germany are very straightforward, although Europe uses their own formula to calculate the octane ratings.
