Belfast, the capital of Northern Ireland, is a large city, full of historical sites and fun places to see and things to do. Belfast is the second largest city in all of Ireland, second only to Dublin, which is the capital of the Republic of Ireland. Belfast is divided by walls, called “peace lines”, into fourteen districts. These districts all have unique things to do and see in them. They all have their own name and character.
One historical site in Belfast is Sentry Hill Historic House and Visitor Center. Guided tours are offered by the site staff, and the gallery offers many extraordinary historical objects to see. Local historical publications are available in the Resource Room. A café was created from the old stables, complete with souvenir shop.
Mount Stewart was once the home of several political leaders and societal figures. It is now a National Trust property of great regard in Northern Ireland. The Temple of the Winds offers dramatic breathtaking views to visitors. Exotic gardens call to guests to explore the wonders of nature. Tours of the home and land surrounding it reveals historical facts little known and art work displayed in this World Heritage Site. Easter Egg Trails and other family events are held here throughout the year.
Saint George’s Market is the oldest continually run market in all of Ireland. It was built in 1896 and has been run non stop since then. The market offers a variety of different options and specialties for different days of the week, including local and global specialties.
Musgrave Park, named after Sir Henry Musgrave who donated the land that the park sits on, is located in the southern part of Belfast. It opened to the public in 1924 and features walking paths and horticultural displays. It also includes tennis courts, bowling greens, Gaelic football, hurling, and camogie pitches. The lush landscaping and family friendly atmosphere makes this park a favorite of locals and tourists alike.
The Belfast City Centre is made of Donegall Square and Belfast City Hall. City Hall is a monument of great architecture, and guided tours are offered daily. The grounds include a breathtaking memorial to victims of the Titanic, and also a memorial statue of Queen Victoria.
The Titanic Boat Tour shows off Belfast’s strange pride in the tragic part the city played in the making of the ship that cost so many lives. The boat yard where the Titanic was built is being recreated into a residential and commercial quarter called the Titanic Quarter. All of these tours and sights make Belfast a wonderful tourist town.
