The actual city of Agde, located near the contemporary coastal resort of Cap d’Agde France, has 2600 years of recorded history. Amateur historians with a taste for a seaside holiday will find the area to be a very attractive holiday destination. Great pains have been taken to preserve the city’s heritage, including a number of sites worth visiting. There are some great hotels in Agde so book yourself a vacation here this year.
Several of the city’s churches are well worth visiting. The magnificent Cathedral of Saint-Etienne is a must-see as is the equally resplendent Saint Andre. Saint-Sever’s sixteenth century polychrome crucifix should not be missed, nor should Notre-Dame-du-Grau, a priory where the Virgin Mary is said to have appeared and which lies on the pilgrimage route To Saint-Jacques de Compostelle from Saint-Gilles.
The Canal du Midi terminates at Agde. The canal is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a fantastic feat of engineering that connects the Mediterranean Sea with the Atlantic Ocean. At Agde its main point of interest is the famous Round Lock with its three outlets and a round shape to permit shipping to turn to use any one of them.
Fort Brescou is well worth the afternoon’s boat trip required to visit it. The original 1586 fortress constructed on a volcanic island was demolished in 1632. The structure now visible was the product of reconstruction in 1680. Fort Brescou is an especially scenic spot with its walls the color of sand rising above the blue Mediterranean. This is a particularly good spot for photographers of all levels.
Neoclassical Chateau Laurens was built between 1898 and 1901 on land that has since been turned into an island by the construction of the Canal du Midi. The building itself is currently undergoing restoration and so regrettably is not open to visitors. Its grounds, however, have been landscaped with great care and make a great spot for a picnic in fine weather. It can be accessed via a footbridge across the Canalet.

The Naked Truth About Cap d’Agde
Libertines and naturists alike abound in Cap d’Agde, the legendary nudist resort town in Southern France that attracts 300,000 visitors each summer. This 192-page book (with 16 pages of color photos) tells you why–and how to make the most of holiday to this famous “naked city.” Cap d’Agde offers more than a gorgeous wide stretch of nudist beach with some tacky gift shops and overpriced seafood restaurants. It’s a full-fledged town with its own vibe and rhythm. Cap d’Agde can be laid back and sensual, exciting and erotic, busy and overbearing, and earthy and rude–but never quite normal and normally quite surreal. When you see 100 people huddled in a circle on a certain stretch of beach in the Cap, don’t automatically assume that they are waiting to buy ice creams. And, yes, you were the only person wearing clothes in the queue at the post office the other day. Cap d’Agde helps you make the transition from the humdrum to the slightly fantastic.
