With a large active family, we like to do a lot of things together, whether it’s biking, or watching the kid’s play baseball, or spending time in the back yard together, it feels like we are always going in one direction or another. Because of this, it can be difficult to find time to make sure everybody’s toys are put away, or our coats are hanging up, or any of those little details that can make or break how nice a home looks.
As a compromise, we usually just make sure things are orderly, if not necessarily straightened up. For example, in our back yard we have a bike storage shed that we keep our bikes and the kids’ toys in, but the shed itself is usually pretty messy inside.
I suppose I could be more insistent that everything be placed exactly in a neat and orderly way, but on the other hand, I’m not too concerned with that sort of cleanliness. I would much rather spend my time with the family, make sure everything is hidden away in the shed, and be done with it.
The same is true of our coats, to an extent. We keep most of our coats and hats in some mudroom lockers in the back hallway. These lockers hold the jackets nicely, but they themselves tend to absorb any mud or snow or leaves that get drug in. That’s fine – we’ll clean them out to an extent, but I don’t think we’re going to be judged by how nice our mudroom lockers look. And again, I’m fine with that.
These compromises keep our house and yard looking good, without being so particular over everything that it drives people nuts. If you have a similar problem with your house, don’t stress out, just find a way to hide the mess away.
