Christmas is a festive season indeed, and there is nothing like the twinkling lights on a tree that brings the feeling of warmth and good cheer. Christmas string lights can be used in other ornaments too such as garlands and wreaths. They can also be used to make light balls, great for making any garden or porch sparkle. There is no need to buy expensive Christmas displays; these can be done with some chicken wire and a few strings of spare Christmas lights. You can use conventional mains powered string lights, or opt for outdoor solar powered string lights instead. Good solar lights are more expensive, but they do allow more flexibility in that you can easily install them a long way form your house.
To begin, purchase a roll of chicken wire from the hardware store, and for a medium sized ball cut a piece about 45 inches long and 25 inches wide. Use a wire cutter for easy clipping and some working gloves for protection since wire ends have sharp edges. Roll the cut wire into a cylinder; attach the wire ends together with hands or pliers. Form a rectangle by folding the wire inwards on both ends. Slowly mash both ends together until the wire begins to resemble a ball, this will serve as a frame for the Christmas lights.
Gather about two 100 count string lights, use ones that connect with each other. It can be solid white or multi-colored for a more festive look. Make sure they are tested for burned out bulbs that need to be removed, check for nicks along the string as well, this can pose as a fire hazard if left exposed. Once the lights are checked, carefully wind them around the ball and attach an extension cord, if in case the power outlet is far from where you will place the ball. The beauty of this project is its flexibility; additional pieces can be made in different sizes. Forming two larger balls and making a unique snowman is another great idea for an outdoor display.
