Get Your Home Ready For Winter

Are you ready for winter?  You might be with your sweaters and winter coats, but is your house ready for winter?  What do you need to do?  There are several things that you should consider so you can save money in heating your home.

First, you’ll have to change out your window screens and put in your storm windows.  Doing this change will provide an extra barrier against the cold elements.  Even if you have old windows in your home where they are considerably drafty and leaky, you may want to change them out sometime in the future.  This is an expensive option, but in the mean time you can go to your local hardware store and buy a window insulator kit.  It’s of course a temporary thing because in the springtime you can undo the kit.

Second, with the colder weather coming, you should replace your old thermostat with a new programmable one if you haven’t done so already.  These work great by allowing you to set the temperature of home to be lower automatically when you are away from your home or when you are sleeping.  All you need to do is figure out when you are home and away and program your thermostat accordingly.

Third, you’ll want to check out your furnace to make sure that you have clean ductwork and new clean filters in place.  If you aren’t comfortable doing it yourself, you’ll need to call a Heating, Ventilating, and Air Conditioning (HVAC) service professional.  If you have an old furnace, you’ll probably want it checked out by a HVAC service person.

Fourth, check out your snow removal supplies.  You may need to stock up on shovels, rock salt, or look into buying the best snow blowers.
