The crime rate in Houston is higher than most other cities in the United States but there are some steps that you can take to ensure that you find the safest apartment in which to live.
Here are some tips on choosing a safe apartment.
- Rent an apartment above the first floor. Ninety percent of all apartment break-ins occur on the first floor.
- Use an apartment locator service as they are free and have excellent neighborhood and crime data.
- Ask the management company if the apartment building is wired for alarm monitoring. If it is you may be able to have your apartment monitored for a small fee.
- Drive by the apartment building at night to inspect the lights in and around the building. Is it well light? Are there a lot of light bulbs that need replacing?
- Park near the building at night as well and observe the activity on the street. Who is coming and going? What kinds of people frequently appear on the street at night?
- Choose an apartment with a security guard on duty 24 hours a day.
- Research the current crime statistics at Houston Police Department Crime Stats.
- Many people fall victim to crimes by leaving valuables in their car. Make sure that expensive property isn’t visible in your car.
- Lastly, the best way to ensure that a building is safe is to speak to tenants currently living in the building.
