There is one thing to remember when shopping for carpets and rugs and that is, very often you get what you pay for. If you want good quality large area rugs for your home, they are not going to be cheap as a rule. But you also don’t have to pay the earth for them when funds are tight, if you shop carefully.
On the other hand, you will need to resign yourself to the fact that the hand tufted pure New Zealand wool rug in the local interior design shop is out of your league, but that does not mean that you can’t have something beautiful to grace your floor. If your rug has good thick pile and is the right color, size and design for your room it can look a million dollars.
Before you start looking you should probably decide that you will only look at short pile rugs. Cheap shag rugs very often look cheap and if you want shag pile, then you need to be prepared to pay extra to get something that will look good on your floor. Low cost shag style rugs are generally those which you might buy for a student’s dorm room and throw away after a year. They are not the sort of thing you want as a focal point in your living room.
The best thing to do is to look for sturdy yet well-designed polypropylene rugs in the size you need. These wear well and they come in every color and design you can imagine so there is no need to worry that you will not get something to suit your home. Once you have found the design and color to match your furnishings (or the furnishings in your projected color scheme) look for the right size. Your rug should either cover the room leaving an approximate two foot gap around the perimeter or mark out a particular area of the room such as a seating or dining area.
The best place to find these rugs in large sizes at low cost is on the Internet where you can browse to your heart’s content until you find what you are looking for. In many cases you will be surprised by the range of prices charged for very similar products (and often for the same product) so once you find your dream rug it is worth continuing to shop around a bit to see if you can find the same rug cheaper elsewhere.
