Getting to organize your closet is quite an event. First you have to take everything out. Then get rid of all the extra stuff that you’ve been planning to clear out for some time now. Then putting it all back into its proper place with the best of intentions to keep it there. Here are three ways to helps you with the clearing out step.
This can actually be a very fun part of getting organized. You want to invite over a friend or family member to keep you telling the truth and help you to get rid of the stuff you are not using. We like to think that our stuff is important and we need to hold onto it. Our friends and family often know us well enough to know if this is true or not and hold us to it.
A professional clutter clearer is worth their weight in gold…. or is that clutter? Either way they will be hugely helpful to you to get down to what you need and really want. This is a good choice if you don’t have any friends or family that are a good help.
Here are the rules to use when deciding what to do wit an item:
-Does it fit? Really fit, not kind of. Be honest.
-When was the last time you wore it? More then 6 months, or a year if you are in a seasonal region. If so it has to go.
-Do I feel good about this item now? Not when I bought it, not how much I paid for it, simply do I like it now and want to use it now? Be honest…I know it hurts.
Now that you have done all the hard work you can start on the fun stuff, which is putting it all back together again. With everything out of your closet you have to now decide how it is that you want to organize you clothing. There are three options that I’m going to suggest. They are the most popular and will likely work the best however don’t disqualify a method that you know will work well for you. Sort by color, sort by purpose of the clothing or sort by season if you are in a place where this is relevant. What ever you decide stick with it. Put in all hanging clothes using this strategy. Then start on your folded clothes by folding them all to fit well on top of each other. You want to be able to see them clearly other wise they will get messed up as you try to find things that are buried. After this is done you are on to the small stuff. This can be tricky. You wan to make sure that these items are grouped together and can be contained. You can do this using clear plastic storage boxes or pretty baskets. Hats, belts, shoes, bags all need to be in one area each. The exception to this is if an item only goes with one outfit. Then it can be hung up with that particular outfit. Look for little pockets of space in your closet and then think of what would fit well where. If you can detect a few think of what may be able to go there, either hooks, baskets, special hangers or wall mounts. There are so many options, and if you are stuck then check out online to find something suitable. With everything put away you are home free. Now the last step is to take a photo to remember this grand day and then try to keep it this way.
