The internet has changed how long distance relationships work. What was once the sole realm of telephones and love letters has been taken over by computers and the internet. In fact, the internet has introduced a whole new type of long distance relationship with the concept of chat room dating – something that could not be done before modern technology came along. Chat room dating is where the entire relationship takes place in an internet chat room. Rather than the traditional model of internet dating, where two people meet on the internet and then decide if they want to meet in person, chat room dating takes place with the understanding that the relationship will be (primarily) over the internet. This is similar to a long distance relationship in you are very rarely with the other person in the relationship. You must deal with all of each other’s problems using the internet instead of sitting down with one another and talking about it.
How is it different?
Chat room dating may take many concepts from long distance relationships; however they do have their own unique set of problems. People are often much different when talking on the internet than they are in person. The relative safety and anonymity of the internet can have a large effect on a person’s personality. When you finally do meet each other in person, you may find that the relationship you thought you had was with a much different person than the internet version of this person led you to believe.
What part do chat rooms play in relationships?
Long distance relationships may differ from chat room dating, however that does not mean that chat rooms cannot be a part of a regular long distance relationship. One of the most important part of any relationship is communication, and internet chat rooms can make communicating during a long distance relationship much easier than it would be otherwise. By using internet chat rooms as an alternative to phones, instead of an alternative to real dating, you may find that your relationship becomes even stronger. The important thing to remember is that a chat room is a tool in the relationship, not a foundation on which a relationship is built.
