The 70s are back in full swing and it’s taking over everything fashion, as evidenced by the resurgence of peasant tops, maxi dresses and flared jeans on every Hollywood celebrity you can think of. Can’t you just see Rachel Zoe having the fashion time of her life with the big comeback of her favorite fashion era?
- But before you raid your mom’s closet, you should first know what you’re looking for right? So here’s a quick lesson in 70s fashion trends.
- The 70s was a hodge podge of styles that range from a 60s fashion hangover (mini skirts, midi skirts), hippie clothing, disco and during its later parts even punk.
- Bell bottoms or flared pants were a big thing back then. And with floor length pants, naturally platform soled shoes are called for.
- It was also an era of glamour wherein women will wear maxi dresses or shiny cat suit ensembles to formal gatherings.
- There were also a lot of British influence during this time, especially the punk and glam rock genre, which would probably explain cropped tops.
- Piling on the accessories was the number one rule in the 70s.
Now that you’ve had a few pointers about 70s fashion, here are some 70s archetypes you can draw fashion inspiration from.
The Flower Child.
Easily characterized by easy, breezy clothing, the flower child is hippie fashion at its finest. Feel the peace loving vibe by putting on a maxi dress – preferably with small flower prints or paisley – and pairing it with gold sandals (I recommend wedge sandals as it will give you that height that you need not to trip on your dress). For accessories, don’t forget long beaded necklaces, large sunnies, and a flower tucked behind your ear.
The Rockstar.
Just picture Jimi Hendrix and you’ve got a pretty good idea on how to dress like a rockstar in the 70s. Put on your bell bottoms, your regular t-shirt, a good denim jacket and slather yourself with tons of accessories – leather bracelets, head gear, rings. Oh and of course don’t forget to bring some attitude.
The Disco Belle.
I have three words: Saturday Night Fever. Who can forget that iconic dance sequence by John Travolta in this movie? With his bell bottoms, platform shoes, and open shirt. And for the ladies, it’s time to bring out those halter cat suits and tight, tight hot pants, cause we’re staying alive alright.
