Frank Toskan and Frank Angelo of Canada founded Makeup Art Cosmetics Inc., popularly known as MAC Cosmetics in the year 1984. Toskan was the brain behind the products. Before partnering with Angelo, Toskan with his brother-in-law, Victor Casale, a chemist, experimented on several formulas. The idea was to create a cosmetic line that is more suitable for professional makeup, specially the fashion industry. The first MAC makeup store was opened at Greenwich Village, New York in 1991.
Later in 1994, Estée Lauder Companies bought the controlling interest of MAC Cosmetics and completed the acquisition in 1998. MAC has scaled great heights in the cosmetic industry since then, and now stands as the most recognized and accepted companies in the world.

Five years after they opened their first store in the US, Mac Cosmetics opened another office at Paris in the year 1996. The original founder Angelo passed away in the year 1997 and Toskan along with his brother-in-law left the corporation immediately after.
Estee Lauder did not change the name of the company and retained it to make sure that nothing changed including that of the excellence of the product and quality. Now, the Mac products and makeup tips are not just restricted to fashion industry alone, but people from all walks of life can get them at various Mac stores, and of the same quality.
