Dyeing my hair is always the highlight of my year. I only do it a few times through out the year, it it invariably tends to be a spur of the moment thing when I just suddenly realize that I’m tired of my hair color (and have been for sometime).
Sometimes I just grab a bottle of dye and go at it with whatever color I think will be best. There are other times, though, when I like to strategize and try to come up with something that is unique, layered and eye-catching.
My main standby is to go with a combination of highlights and lowlights. Being a dark blonde, I have a lot of latitude to go either way with my color. When I do highlights, I like to focus mostly on lightening the tips of my hair. I do like how highlight jobs look when they are done as streaks, and I typically end up with a few streaks in my hair, but I primarily just focus on the tips.
I then like to have some lowlights worked in either in a darker brown color or a dark caramel, which I have found is a great look for me. I like to have the lowlights streaked in to darken my hair overall and provide a better contrast.
While looking for hair highlight ideas, I ran across the idea of ombre hair color. This is where you leave the roots darker – probably closer to their natural color – and then highlight just the lower portion of the hair. If you are doing ombre color yourself, you start with the tips to get them dramatically lighter and then work backwards up the hair in lighter and lighter layers to create a gradient look down your hair from about the chin level down.
There are so many hair color ideas to choose from, the look never has to be the same. Find an idea you like and give it a try!
