Does Your Cat Have Feline Herpes – Symptoms Associated With The Feline Virus

Feline herpes is another one of those illnesses that has no cure, although all hope is not lost as even though it is not curable it is treatable. Herpes is a virus and viruses can be very difficult to cure, it is believed that the herpes virus feeds off an amino acid called Arginine fall. It is believed that the herpes virus relies on this acid to multiply, but if we can increase the levels of another amino acid Lysine then we can reduce the levels of Arginine fall and restrict the ability of the virus to grow. Whether this actually works or not is very difficult to say as the herpes virus comes and goes through out the life of the animal. As with all such illnesses that come and go some outbreaks will be more severe than others. Trying to stay on top of herpes is the key i think, there are no anti viral drugs effective in destroying the herpes simplex virus once and for all, but there are secondary treatments that we can use. These include antibiotics and feline eye ointments.

As i said earlier lysine can help reduce the acids that the herpes virus feeds off and this can be given to your pet in the form of supplements to add to your pets food.  This will help alleviate and reduce the severity and longevity of respiratory and ocular symptoms associated with the feline virus. There are no known side effects associated with Lysine even when given in high doses, Lysine is a natural amino acid found in many protein rich foods. But if your cat does display any unusual symptoms then you should contact your veterinarian straight away. The one thing you should be wary of is that you must always be careful when mixing medicines, so if unsure consult your veterinarian.
