In these days of everyone trying to sell us a life-changing solution to our problems, usually for the special offer price of $49.95 (plus $4.95 P&P), it is hard to know what is a scam and what is actually going to make our lives any better.

Take diets for example. These days, we are, as a species, fatter than ever. We eat more calories, we do less physical work, we generally do everything we shouldn’t. Our bodies cry out to us to change our habits but we just keep abusing them with fast food, overeating, alcohol excess, inactivity… it’s no wonder there is money to be made in selling diet schemes. So many of us need one.

Well I was someone who needed a good diet plan more than most. I have always been a greedy eater so I realized it was time to change all that by going on a diet. I must have tried fifty different ones through the years. I did grapefruit diets, Atkins diet, vegan diets, FatLoss4Idiots diets, all kinds of things but none of them actually changed me.

But then I realized the mistake I was making. I wasn’t exercising.

Some of like to kid ourselves and claim that we do exercise by “going to work” (in a car) or “taking the dog out” (to the garden). How many of us actually do exercise that really gets our body working hard? Exercise speeds up the body’s metabolism, meaning if we exercise we burn more calories and hence lose more fat. What’s more, when we exercise it actually suppresses our appetite. How many times have you noticed that when you are playing sports you don’t even think about food? Compare that to when you are watching TV and you suddenly feel like a snack. Strange, isn’t it?

I just need to shift my butt off the sofa and go for a run a few times a week.
