Warhammer 40,000 (Warhammer 40K) is a hugely popular table-top-miniature war game, in which players assemble and then paint various figurines, about an inch in size, representing vehicles, creatures, and soldiers (such as 40k Space Wolves) of the 41st millennium. Once a player collects enough miniature figures, he forms them into armies with which to fight other players’ armies. They choose a scenario and move the pieces around the tabletop to enact the plot, controlled by dice rolls and various reference tables. Games can take a very short while or can go on for days, and may cover millennia of action. Warhammer 40K tournaments abound.
There is a vast amount of backstory for Warhammer 40,000 fans to integrate into their games. The core plot is that the God-Emperor of Mankind conceives a Great Crusade to unify a shattered galactic federation. As part of his plan, he creates 20 Primarchs called Space Marines, great warriors who have been genetically, surgically, and/or hypnotically enchanced to possess superhuman abilities. One of the Primarchs, Lehman Russ, has a Space Marine Legion called the Space Wolves.
The Warhammer Space Wolves of 40k are known for bucking the rules. They do not bow to central command, and they do not subscribe to the Codex Astartes, which describes regulations that are supposed to be followed by Space Marines. They only use such officially recommended tactics as suit them. They are afraid of nothing, but their propensity for not following rules has given them a reputation for being poorly disciplined. They are much like Vikings, with plenty of grog-drinking, and like werewolves, with fangs and many wolf-related references and behaviors. They arrange themselves into packs, while the other galactic soldiers organize themselves into Tactical Squads. Like animals, they have extra-powerful senses, and distrust and avoid using man-made technology, preferring to believe in their own superstitious ways.
Battle of the Fang (A Warhammer 40,000 – Space Marine Battles)
It is M32, a thousand years after the Horus Heresy. The Scouring is over and the Imperium at the height of its post-Crusade power. When Magnus the Red is tracked down to Gangava Prime, the Space Wolves hasten to engage the daemon primarch. Even as Great Wolf Harek Ironhelm closes on his ancient enemy, the Fang on the Space Wolves home world is besieged by a massive force of Thousand Sons. A desperate battle ensues as the skeleton forces of Wolf Lord Asvald Greylock attempt to hold back the attacking hosts before the last of his meagre defences gives in. Though a single Scout ship survives to summon Great Wolf Harek Ironhelm back to Fenris, none of the defenders truly realise the full scale the horror that awaits them nor what the Battle for the Fang will cost them all.
