Purchasing Used Tires

Automobiles are an expensive commodity, not only to purchase, but to maintain as well.  In light of this, many of us are conscious of finding ways to save money on the upkeep of our vehicles.  For some, it’s finding the cheapest oil changes in town, or finding a favorite mechanic who we trust.  For others it’s buying the cheapest parts possible.

The important thing to consider when buying maintenance parts for our autos is to make sure we don’t skimp on quality, when it comes to safety.  The biggest items that come to mind are brakes, suspension parts and tires.

Tires are an expensive ongoing cost for most owners.  Having odd tire sizes or lower profile performance tires can raise the costs exponentially.  Purchasing used tires, however, is an avenue not often realized or explored by most owners.

So where do used tires come from?  They come from many possible sources.  Often when a dealer takes a car in on a trade they will install brand new tires to increase the chances for a resale.  There are many owners who buy new tires and find they aren’t satisfied with the performance of the tires and trade them in for another brand or model.  Also, accidented vehicles that are write offs, will usually have a couple of good tires up for grabs.  Vehicles that have outlived their natural life spans will often have perfectly good tires for resale.

So where do you get used tires from?  A car dealership may have some available, as well as auto service shops and tire sale outlets.  Check your local listings also, because many owners will sell tires privately.  Check with your local salvage yards too, they just might have your size.  If you drive in winter, buying a set of slightly used winter tires is an excellent way to go, as often an owner will sell their winter tires separately, when they sell their car.  You may even get some extra rims along with them, which will save on twice per year installation and balancing costs.

So have a look around, you just may find something that fits…  Always buy matching pairs for the left and right sides, though, and inspect each tire carefully for abnormal wear, punctures and age.  If you save on tires you may just have some money left over to treat your car with other goodies like some nice car speakers or a fresh paint job.
